History of Illegal Immigration

During the early part of the 20th century, the gates were opened to immigrants from all nations who could come to the United States to find a better way of life. They were processed through Ellis Island in New York and were then dispensed into the workforce. Although they were legal immigrants, their lot in life was not much different than illegal immigrants today.  Much of this was due to the fact that they came from countries that had corrupt police forces and were afraid to ask for help; as a result, many were exploited in the workforce.

Illegal immigration involves people coming to the United States without the adequate visa to stay and/or work in the country. We often think of illegal immigrants as coming from Mexico, because it is our Southern border, but the truth is that many illegal immigrants come to the US each year from all over the world. They often come on a passport to visit and then wind up staying. Many are afraid of being caught and deported. They often work, pay taxes, but do not get the benefits that their taxes entitle them to get. And many of them, like the early immigrants, are afraid of the laws that they do not understand. 

After 9/11, there was more of a crackdown on illegal immigration in the United States, but there is still a great amount of illegal immigrants going into the country. Those who want to become legal residents can try to apply for residency, according to certain amnesties the government gives out. But they have to understand a bit about the law. Fortunately, there are many immigration groups who are able to help them, even to overcome a language barrier that may prevent them from seeking help.

Illegal immigration has a long history in the United States and is hardly anything new.
